OUR WORK

What is animation production?

Animation is a broad term covering anything from moving text and graphics to dynamic illustrations, photography and everything in between.

Motion graphics (or ‘motion design’) is an animation approach of moving graphic design including typography, shapes, icons, photographs, textures, and brand features. A motion graphic represents a general theme that concentrates on information and messaging rather than narrative or drama. As such, a motion graphic can include both 2D and 3D visual techniques.

2D animation and rotorscoping

Unlike 3D and VFX services, ‘2D animation’ is a term used more broadly, and is inherently the approach of moving flat illustrations or digital images to create the illusion of movement. This style can be driven by any theme and often features animated people or characters.

‘Traditional’ or ‘cel’ animation is a type of 2D animation, most commonly associated with old-school cartoons and films (think classic Disney and Tom & Jerry). This look is achieved through sequential illustrations to achieve movement a bit like a flip book.

Rotoscoping refers to the process of manually altering footage one frame at a time to achieve a desired artistic effect that is grounded in realism. Stop Motion is another example of ‘real-world’ animation, whereby physical models or objects can be manipulated in a sequential way. Wallace and Gromit is a classic example of this.

What style of animation is best?

There is no right or wrong, better or worse choice when it comes to different styles of animation. The most important thing is to identify what style works and this depends on a variety of factors. This is where our close collaboration with clients comes into play.

Before artwork begins, we work closely with you to understand your brand identity and the right tone of voice. We take this information and determine the most suitable and effective creative direction to take, as each style of animation has its own virtues and can be pushed to achieve different visual moods and energy.
